What is FireSmart?

The FireSmart program was created in the early 1990’s by Partners in Protection.  The founding group was a collaboration of federal, provincial and municipal agencies from across Canada, sharing a common goal to teach communities and homeowners how to reduce the threat of wildfire in the wildland/urban interface area.

Interface fires are a real threat in Waiparous.  We are a community surrounded by thick combustible vegetation. A Community FireSmart plan can help reduce the risk of the damaging effects of wildfire.  The Summer Village of  Waiparous adopted a Community FireSmart Plan in 2008 and an updated Plan in 2013. Everyone can share in creating a safer community.

Spring and fall are high risk seasons for wildfire.  By reducing risks, there is less chance a wilfire will affect your property.  Please take the time to assess your property and eliminate as many fire hazards and fuel sources as possible.
